Our Teachers

KENTON LANIER, viola & violin

Originally from Kansas City, Kenton has been playing violin since he was 10. His mom was a music teacher, so he grew up around a lot of music! While working on his undergrad in music theory & composition, he picked up viola and liked it so much that he got a Masters in Viola Performance from UMKC, studying under acclaimed violist Scott Lee. He is also finishing a Masters in Musicology (music history & research).

Kenton started playing in orchestras at age 15, and continues to perform viola professionally with orchestras, including Tulsa’s Signature Symphony. Before moving to Tulsa, he was also conducting an orchestra in Kansas. He especially enjoys playing in string quartets, and as a duo with his wife, Rebekah. Kenton is the music director at Memorial Baptist Church, where he leads the band from guitar (a newer instrument for him!).

When he is not doing something music-related, you will probably find Kenton cheering for the Royals and Chiefs, building some cool LEGOs, or eating barbecue.

REBEKAH LANIER, piano & harp

Growing up near Nashville, TN, Rebekah had an abundance of musical opportunities as a child. She started learning piano at age 4, and began studying harp when she was 14. She and her siblings played music together frequently, and she also had numerous opportunities to participate in performance festivals and competitions, which helped her become more confident in her musicianship. She continued studying music in college, earning a BA in music theory & composition, with an emphasis in piano performance.

Rebekah enjoys performing on both piano and harp with soloists, ensembles, and orchestras, but she especially loves playing as a duo with her husband, Kenton. One highlight for her was performing a piano concerto with Kenton conducting the orchestra. She also has years of experience playing for churches, and she currently plays piano in the band at Memorial Baptist Church in Tulsa.

As a teacher, Rebekah loves helping her students gain confidence in their own abilities as they study and learn, and she especially enjoys it when her students “catch the bug” and get excited about sharing their music with others! She loves working with young beginners, but also enjoys helping advanced students prepare for performances and college auditions.

When she is not teaching or playing music, you will probably find Rebekah in the kitchen, reading a good book, or spending time outdoors.
